Dolittle’s

From starting out in a basement apartment to becoming Charleston’s first self-service dog wash and providing the area with the largest selection of natural pet food options, Dolittle’s is a South Windermere Center treasure. To learn more about how this business works to improve the relationship between pets and people in Charleston, we put this month’s spotlight on owner, Ric Sommons.

Tell us a little bit about how and why you founded Dolittle’s?

Ric: I’ve always had a love for pets. Growing up there were never less than five cats and or dogs in our house at a time. My family used to shop for them at the local pet store. I always loved the experience. There were foods I had never heard of and treats that kept everyone’s tail wagging. I liked it so much I ended up working at that store at age 13.

Pets and pets supplies are what I have grown up with. Today there are hundreds of thousands of products supplying a multi-billion dollar industry. I’ve tried to keep it simple with products that are useful and of high quality. Everything that you will find at Dolittle’s is something I offer my own pets.

What makes your shop unique?

Ric: While competitive online sales grow exponentially it’s important for my stores to adapt. We offer more social events now. Our staff has years of first hand experience. Additionally, we are expanding to other markets to increase availability and later next year our website will allow for in-store pick-ups to be ordered on-line.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Ric: We appreciate every customer (and their pets) for making the choice to support their neighborhood pet supply store. To say thank you we offer monthly promos, free birthday gifts and customers regularly receive $25 off their purchases.

Dolitte’s and their mission is nothing short of inspiring. Pets are family too and everyone wants the best for theirs! With a welcoming staff and an array of unique products and services, the brand has it all!
